The silhouette, meaning the overall shape of a wedding dress, changes how it looks, how it moves and how comfortable you'll be all day. The three most popular shapes are A-line, mermaid and ball gown. This guide explains the difference between them, who each one tends to suit, and shows real examples from our store.
Quick comparison
| Silhouette | Shape | Comfort and movement | Best for | Example in our store | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-line | Fitted at the bodice, then flares gently to the floor like the letter A | Easiest to walk, sit and dance in | Most body shapes, outdoor and relaxed weddings | V-Neck A-Line Chiffon Wedding Dress | $242.75–$253.78 |
| Mermaid | Fitted through the hips and thighs, flaring out at or below the knee | Most restrictive when walking and sitting | Showing off curves, evening and formal weddings | High Waist White Lace Mermaid Wedding Dress | $238.20–$241.28 |
| Ball gown | Fitted bodice with a very full skirt from the waist | Comfortable on top, but the wide skirt takes up space | Classic, formal and large-venue weddings | Lace Ball Gown Wedding Dress Long Sleeves | $458.70–$473.83 |
A-line wedding dresses: the easy, flattering choice
An A-line dress fits at the bodice and waist, then flares out gradually to the hem. Because the skirt skims over the hips instead of hugging them, it is one of the most forgiving and comfortable shapes, and it suits a wide range of body types.
The V-Neck A-Line Chiffon Wedding Dress ($242.75–$253.78) comes in ivory chiffon with a mid waist and zip closure. It is available in a wide size range, from 2 up to 26W.
Choose A-line if: you want comfort, freedom to move and dance, or a style that works for a beach, garden or relaxed wedding.
Mermaid wedding dresses: dramatic and figure-hugging
A mermaid dress fits closely through the bodice, hips and thighs, then flares out dramatically at or just below the knee. It highlights curves and makes a strong statement, especially in photos. The trade-off is movement: walking, sitting and dancing take more care.
Examples from our wedding dress collection:
- High Waist White Lace Mermaid Wedding Dress ($238.20–$241.28), in lace
- Lace Mermaid Wedding Dress ($275.55), white lace, sizes XS to XXXL
- Off the Shoulder Long Sleeves Mermaid White Wedding Dress ($492.40–$507.53), lace with pearl details, sizes 2 to 16
Choose mermaid if: you want a glamorous, fitted look and don't mind a little less freedom of movement.
Ball gown wedding dresses: classic fairytale style
A ball gown pairs a fitted bodice with a very full skirt that starts at the waist. It's the most traditional, fairytale shape and looks especially striking in large venues and at formal ceremonies. The full skirt is comfortable to wear but takes up space, so think about aisles, cars and dance floors.
- Lace Ball Gown Wedding Dress Long Sleeves ($458.70–$473.83), lace with pearl details, sizes 2 to 16
- Beaded White Ball Gown Wedding Dress Long Sleeves ($741.90–$764.13), our most detailed ball gown
- Bustier Korean Princess Beaded Tulle Wedding Dress ($139.33–$148.28), a budget-friendly princess style with sizes from XS to 6XL
Choose a ball gown if: you have always pictured a classic, dramatic entrance and your venue has space for a full skirt.
Expecting? Consider a high-waist princess style
If you're pregnant on your wedding day, a high waist that sits above the bump is usually the most comfortable choice. The Pregnant Women Princess Wedding Dress with Lace Sleeves ($320.53) has a high waist, short sleeves and a princess skirt, in sizes 2 to 22W.
Sizing tips before you order
- Our dresses use Asian sizing, which runs 1–2 sizes smaller than standard US and European sizes. If you're between sizes, choose the larger one.
- Measure your bust, waist and hips and compare them with the size chart on each dress page, rather than going by your usual size.
- Allow for a small difference of about 2–3cm, since garments are measured by hand.
- Order well before your wedding so you have time for fittings and any alterations.

Wedding dress silhouette FAQ
Which wedding dress shape is the most comfortable?
A-line is usually the most comfortable, because the skirt flares gently and doesn't restrict your legs. Ball gowns are comfortable on the body but wide; mermaid dresses are the most restrictive.
Which silhouette suits a curvy figure?
Mermaid dresses highlight curves, while A-line dresses gently skim the hips. Both can be flattering; it depends whether you want to emphasise your shape or prefer a softer line.
How early should I order my wedding dress?
Orders are processed within 1–3 business days, then delivery takes 3–7 business days in the USA or 7–20 business days internationally. Order well ahead of your wedding to leave time for alterations. Free US shipping is available on most products, and any shipping cost is shown at checkout.
Can I return a wedding dress?
You can request a return within 7 days of delivery if the dress is unworn, with tags and in its original packaging. Dresses priced $300 or more can be returned only with approval after inspection. See our Refund Policy.
